Finding Your Tribe: How Wellness Collectives Combat the Epidemic of Loneliness

Loneliness is becoming an epidemic in our hyperconnected world, and it's taking a toll on our health and well-being. People are looking for genuine human connections and a sense of community that goes beyond their social media feeds. As more people are feeling the effects of social isolation, the wellness industry is experiencing a seismic shift: the rise of the wellness collective.

Fitness and wellness have become the perfect avenues for people to find like-minded individuals and create their own tribes. The wellness collective is about forging connections and empowering individuals to take charge of their own health and well-being.

These communities are popping up all over the world, providing a space for like-minded individuals to connect, exercise, and take care of their physical and mental health together. In many ways, the rise of wellness collectives is a response to the loneliness epidemic and a recognition of the importance of social self-care.

In this blog post, we'll explore the world of wellness collectives and their growing popularity. We'll look at examples of innovative ways that people are coming together for wellness, from social wellness clubs to fitness communities, and we'll dive into why this trend is so inspiring. So, let's explore together how wellness collectives can help combat loneliness and provide the social self-care we all need.

THE EPIDEMIC OF LONELINESS

Loneliness can have a significant impact on our health and well-being, and recent research suggests that it's becoming increasingly common in today's society.

Loneliness and isolation have been prevalent issues even before the COVID-19 pandemic. But as we continue to navigate through these unprecedented times, the U.S. Surgeon General's latest advisory report titled "Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation" couldn't have come at a better time.

The report highlights the physical consequences of poor connections that can be downright devastating.

It reveals that lacking connection can increase the risk of premature death to levels comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

That's a staggering fact. But it doesn't stop there.

The physical consequences of loneliness include an increased risk of heart disease by 29%, stroke by 32%, and a 50% increased risk of developing dementia for older adults.

Fortunately, the advisory report outlines a framework for a new national strategy based on six foundational pillars. These pillars include strengthening social infrastructure, enacting pro-connection public policies, and reforming digital environments to critically evaluate our relationship with technology.

The Surgeon General's advisory report is not just a call to action. It is a reminder that our social connections play a crucial role in our overall health and well-being. Being part of a supportive community can provide numerous health benefits, such as reduced stress levels, improved immune function, and better mental health. A strong social support network can also provide a sense of purpose and meaning in life, which is crucial for overall well-being.

So, in addition to the immediate benefits of finding a community through a wellness collective, it can also contribute to a longer and healthier life. And who doesn't want that?

WHAT IS SOCIAL SELF-CARE AND WHY DO WE NEED IT?

Social self-care

Social self-care is the act of intentionally cultivating and strengthening human connections to enhance one's overall health and well-being. It involves prioritizing social experiences and relationships as part of one's self-care routine.

While traditional self-care practices often focus on individual activities like exercise, meditation, or reading, social self-care recognizes that we are social beings who thrive on connection and community.

Examples of social self-care include spending time with loved ones, joining a community group or club, volunteering, attending events, or simply reaching out to a friend for a chat.

These activities provide an opportunity for individuals to engage in meaningful and authentic social interactions that can improve their mental, emotional, and physical health.

Research has shown that social connection is essential for maintaining overall health and well-being. Studies have found that social isolation and loneliness can have negative effects on physical health. Conversely, having strong social connections has been linked to a range of health benefits, including reduced stress, improved mood, and better immune function.

Incorporating social self-care into one's routine can be a powerful way to prioritize and enhance overall health and wellness. By making time for social experiences and connections, individuals can deepen their relationships, build a sense of community, and cultivate a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

THE RISE OF THE WELLNESS COLLECTIVE

Enter the rise of the wellness collective, a trend rooted in a fundamental human need for social connection and belonging.

As the Global Wellness Institute survey found, 43% of all consumers think that community is a crucial aspect of wellness experiences.

It is interesting to note that men are more likely to prioritize community than women, indicating that social connection is not just a feminine desire, but a universal human need.

To meet this need, people are seeking out fitness and wellness establishments that offer a sense of community and connectedness. This can take many forms, from gyms and fitness classes to wellness studios that provide a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. The rise of the wellness collective is about creating a space where people can socialize, make connections, and feel like they belong.

One way that fitness and wellness establishments can foster this sense of community is by designating spaces for consumers to congregate and socialize. This can be as simple as adding comfortable seating in communal areas or creating spaces for group activities. In addition, creating social events or activities can be another way to bring people together and encourage interaction.

Ultimately, the wellness collective trend is about fostering a sense of belonging and connection that can enhance overall health and well-being.

BENEFITS OF JOINING A WELLNESS COLLECTIVE

By being a part of a community focused on wellness, individuals can feel more supported in their goals and be held accountable for their progress. Prioritizing social interaction and a sense of belonging, fitness and wellness establishments can offer a more holistic approach to wellness that addresses not just physical health, but also mental and emotional well-being. This can lead to greater motivation and more consistent effort towards achieving health and wellness goals.
